A fun, easy listening indie album, from a very good Australian band.
DICE are a fantastically earnest indie-rock band from Perth in Australia. They talk about connection, about being present in the moment, about dancing in the kitchen. The music they make reflects that. It is fast paced, up-tempo and generally joyful. They have been active since 2020 and this is their second album, following on from Midnight Zoo in 2024.
This album was recorded in Los Angeles alongside Joe Chiccarelli, a producer who has worked with The White Stripes, The Strokes and The Killers among others.
‘Loose Change’ is an energetic opener before we hear ‘Cooler.’ It was the lead single for the album and is a good advertisement for it as a whole. The keyboard work is strong on this album. They brought in Tame Impala’s touring player, Jay Watson, to help give some depth to their sound and it has delivered for them.
‘Call Me For A Good Time’ was the most recent single. There is something almost Two Door Cinema Club about the guitars on this. It is an excellent piece of indie-pop. ‘Stars’ is one of the only points where the album slows down and has a quieter moment. It generates some proper emotional depth.
This is a properly enjoyable album from a really solid band. A good one for driving along to on summer road trips. There is a youthful energy to it all and an agenda for a good time. Some of the tracks end up feeling a bit samey, which is the only negative about it.
