An intriguing release for lovers of more abrasive dance albums.

In the Belfast music scene it is Kneecap that have been making all the noise in recent years. Chalk appeared a couple of years after Kneecap but have been steadily garnering attention. They have released three acclaimed EPs, Conditions I, II and III.

Crystalpunk may not quite hit the heights some anticipated after those early releases but it is still a very strong debut album from a fully formed musical concept. Chalk are guitarist and synth player Benedict Hardie-Goddard and Ross Cullen on vocals and production. Their electronica recalls a number of greats. ‘Béal Feirste,’ an eight minute highlight of the album draws favourable comparison to Underworld. ‘Tongue’ ploughs a similar furrow to Fat Dog’s high energy assault. ‘Can’t Feel It’ has major Depeche Mode vibes to it. Fontaines D.C.’s Grian Chatten would likely approve of ‘Longer.’

If you are looking for some intense electro-guitar sounds this is a highly recommended debut.
