Controversial or inspiring? Plenty of politics creeping into this weeks releases.
Single of the Week: Kneecap – Liars Tale
NEW ALBUM INCOMING!!!!! Fenian is due for release on April 24th. Kneecap say the new album has a slightly darker sound, reflecting the times we live in. The enfants terrible, or heroes of the oppressed, depending on which side of the line you fall, exist in a constant swirl of controversy. This is a very strong track, much more on the dance end of their oeuvre. Keir Starmer firmly gets given both barrels.

Bruce Springsteen – Streets of Minneapolis
Musically it is not at the top end of Springsteen’s catalogue, however that is not really the point. A profoundly strong statement about the madness on the streets of America over the last few weeks. Many bands and artists are recording and releasing their own take on this, bravely making their voices heard and encouraging others to do the same.
Ye Vagabonds – Danny
An utterly beautiful folk tinged track. Ye Vagabonds have me swinging between loving their music and finding them a bit twee. This one falls nicely on the right side of the line.

Only The Poets – Monumental
One last single sneaked out before the album launch from one of Reading’s most vital acts, also one of the best tracks on the album.

Tom Misch – Sisters With Me
Misch reflects the craziness of the modern music scene. Between 2018 and 2022 he was making huge progress as an artist. The 2020 album with Yussef Dayes reached Number 4 in the UK album chart and earned both an Ivor Novello nomination. He was in the middle of a huge international tour when he pulled the plug and disappeared from social media. Despite the success his mental health had spiraled into a poor state and he had no idea what he should be doing. He trained as a surfing instructor and did a range of odd jobs including barista and gardening work. Finally he has felt ready to come back, but on his terms. This is a stunning lead single from a forthcoming new album.
Chartreuse – Heaven Sent
What a song. We missed their last album, released in August, but really need to go and have a proper listen to it. Indie-folk meets pop in spectacular fashion on this new one.
Paris Paloma – Good Girl
Supporting Florence and the Machine on their UK tour. Paloma is rapidly ascending towards the top of the UK music scene and as anyone who has seen her perform live can attest, she is the real deal.
Lost Velvet – Dark Cells
Intriguing, heavier-tinged, single from this Reading based duo made up of Robert Butcher and Melissa Morris. They had an EP out in September last year that is heavy on atmosphere.
