The Sophs, Mouth Culture, Sleaford Mods, Cardinals and Jefferson Duke all have serious single of the week contenders.

Single Of The Week: Mouth Culture – On and On

The Leicester based band drew a big crowd in the Festival Republic Tent at both Reading and Leeds this year. This is a quality out and out rock track from the fast-rising Mouth Culture!

The Sophs -I’M YOUR FIEND

This is a gloriously uplifting, ramshackle, mix of melody, scuzz and great vocal delivery.

Sleaford Mods, Gwendoline Christie and Big Special – The Good Life

A meeting of angry minds and a million miles better than Sleaford’s previous single ‘Megaton’. Yet another reminder that Joe Hicklin of Big Special has an incredible voice and doesn’t do anywhere enough singing with it. Props to Gwendoline Christie as well, who just pops up like an auntie in the middle of a nervous breakdown and then disappears just as quickly.

Jefferson Duke – No Idea

Reading Indie Life have been aware of Jefferson Duke and his musical talent for a very long time, in various projects and guises. Most recently he has been one half of the awesome indietronica duo EtaCas that you should go away and listen to right now. This solo effort is quite possibly the best thing he has ever made and is seriously epic.

Cardinals – The Burning of Cork.

Fontaines DC are huge fans of Cardinals and it doesn’t take much listening to them to see why. This is a mega-talented Irish outfit who will be a big part of 2026.

Sports Team – Medium Machine

Sports Team are not a band to sit around idly. Whilst they only put out the brilliant album Boys These Days back in May they are teasing a bit more new material to follow this single. There were a number of tracks from their album sessions that did not quite fit in with the Prefab Sprout vibes of the finished product and that don’t quite fit in with the direction of the next album.

Nieve Ella – Lucky Girl

Nieve Ella was a very enjoyable highlight of Reading Festival this year. She knows how to write a tune as this strong effort shows.

Armand Hammer – Calypso Gene (feat. Silka & Cleo Reed)

Armand Hammer is a knockout mix of Billy Woods (who is having something of a landmark year) and ELUCID. This is a proper slice of hip-hop that recalls DJ Shadow’s Solesides underground hip-hop label.

GUV – Let Your Hands Go

A winning mix of Primal Scream and Kasabian from Ben Cook, a former member of F***ed Up.

Y – Skipper

An impressive watch at this year’s Are You Listening? Festival who are growing in confidence with every release. This is a quality mix of Madness and Blondie.
