Young indie whipper-snappers versus grizzled veterans in this week’s strong singles line-up.
Single of the Week: The Certs – Scenario
This track has been in their live set for months, but I wasn’t anticipating just how well it was going to turn out in recorded form. Still at college, but destined for great things, this a band getting better on a daily basis. This has a top-notch full-throttle start, but an even greater guitar and drums assault on the back end. These boys CAN PLAY!

Hungry – Morning Coffee
The other young indie darlings to nearly walk off with single of the week. This is the track that they introduced as, “This song is about coffee” when we saw them the other week. There is both a lot of confidence and a slight funk underbelly at work here, coming out through some assured guitar-work. ONES TO WATCH.

Deftones – my mind is a mountain
Should probably be subtitled ‘The Deftones Strike Back’ as it almost starts out like a heavy rock/metal version of the ‘Imperial March.’ Truly one of the greatest bands on the planet since they dropped White Pony 25 years ago and this is a searing comeback tune ahead of their first proper album in 5 years.
Wolf Alice – The Sofa
The return of Wolf Alice continues to throw just enough curveballs to make you wonder quite what the new album will be. The piano and orchestral sections are very to the forefront of this one. This is a melody led effort that suggests a band continuing to grow in confidence as a long-term songwriting force.
Rizzle Kicks and Rachel Chinouriri – Follow Excitement!
The second coming of Rizzle Kicks continues apace. This is a great sounding track with a huge sense of fun. Nothing with Rachel Chinouriri on could ever sound bad.
South Arcade – FEAR OF HEIGHTS
I am looking forwards to their Reading Festival appearance more and more with every release. These guys are THE REAL DEAL.
Die Spitz – Throw Yourself to the Sword
Wow oh wow oh wow. I haven’t clocked these prior to this release but wow do they rock hard. An all-female band that have done a few live dates in the last week and the comments from those who went suggest real greatness is present here.
The Hives – Legalize Living
They have described the new album as their attempt to write a stadium rock record; the new material has a suitably big sound because of it. This is not their best track, but medium-strength Hives beats most normal bands full strength efforts.
Joey Valence & Brae – Live Right
My favourite of the double A side release. The beats on this sound HUUUGE on your headphones. Top notch vocal flow.
