4 years After ‘Glow On’ became their breakout album, sending them crashing into the mainstream consciousness, the world’s most successful hardcore band are back to cement a seat at the top table.
Somehow Turnstile have become Schrödinger’s Hardcore Punk Band. They are simultaneously the most hardcore punk band (a musical structure composed of quite a tight set of rules by punks otherwise free for all standards) and also one of the least. They became so hardcore punk they have gone all the way through the looking glass and instead become an 80s influenced rock band, maybe one album away from a full morph into Def Leppard. The act of observation determines the outcome. Look at ‘BIRDS’ and you will see masters of the hardcore punk format giving it their all. Look at ‘SEEIN’ STARS’ and you see the spirit of Sting and the Police. Don’t look and they could be either, everything or neither.

Glow On was an absolute masterpiece as well as a comercial smash, so NEVER ENOUGH has big boots to fill. The album begins with single and title track ‘NEVER ENOUGH.’ It is an excellent start, anthemic, masterful and grabs you from the first second. ‘SOLE’ lands on the proper hardcore tracks side, I defy you not to break out into a spot of headbanging.
‘I CARE’ is the first of several tracks where Brendan Yates sounds extremely like a young Sting. There is nothing wrong with this, it might just be off-putting to fans of the band from the early days who might want a bit of a grumble around ‘selling out.’ ‘SEEIN’ STARS’ and ‘SLOWDIVE’ are the others where this comparison leaps out.
‘SUNSHOWER’ is a mega-intense rush of guitar which then throws you with a flute led breakdown end section. This is a band who is not afraid to experiment. It is way better than anything off André 3000’s ridiculous flute album New Blue Sun. ‘LOOK OUT FOR ME’ might be the best track on the album. It is absolutely intense on the attacks but contrasts it with quieter moments and what resembles a long samba/calypso inspired second half.
‘SEEIN’ STARS’ is like a missing 80s classic hit that you have always known and loved. ‘BIRDS’ is absolutely mental, and I recommend watching the video if you have any interest in a decent mosh-pit.
It doesn’t quite hit the consistent A-Grade level of Glow On. It is still a really strong album by one of the most interesting bands on the planet right now. There are tracks on here that will be setting off indie/rock/metal club nights for years to come.
