This week’s round up features new tracks from Heartworms, Wallows and Reading favourites The Amazons.
Single of the Week: The Amazons – ‘My Blood’
There is something refreshingly old-school rock about this new release from Reading’s finest band. I can definitely see it soundtracking a series of Summer sporting events or appearing on a Match of the Day highlights reel. It has that epic feel from right out of the gates. If you caught a whiff of Royal Blood about it then you wouldn’t be surprised to learn Mike Kerr produced the track and helped write it. Bodes well for the new album.

Wallows: Your New Favourite Song
You have to be either cocky, brave or stupid to call a song, ‘Your New Favourite Song.’ Luckily for Wallows this veers closer to the first two than the last option. This is a nice low-fi effort that brought to mind Pavement in all the right kind of ways.
Sports Team: Bang Bang Bang
Kicking off like a mock-western soundtrack this quickly starts rollocking along at pace. Top notch whistling. It grows on me more with every listen.
Squid: Building 650
Squid’s third album is due imminently and this suggests it should be an intriguing listen. It starts with a somewhat Radiohead vibe before Ollie Judge’s slightly shoutier and louder singing style identifies it more clearly as their own work. A string and brass section add a lot of character.
Heartworms: Extraordinary Wings
Heartworms are starting to generate some buzz and you can see why. This is well crafted with a strong vocal performance that brought a more English CMAT to mind. 3 high quality singles with a different tonal style in a row suggest an album in February that should be well worth checking out.
Hamilton Leithauser: Knockin’ Heart
The Walkmen are a firm favourite of mine so there was no way I could resist this new single from their frontman. Highly enjoyable.
Japanese Breakfast: Orlando in Love
This is a lovely track. I will admit to being unfamiliar with them but will be making an effort to check out their back catalogue on the strength of this.
spill tab: De Guerre
A shapeshifting single from a French-Korean-American artist. Starts with heavier overtones and French singing before morphing around the halfway stage into a slightly more dance creation.
SPELLING: Portrait of my Heart
Earnest indie-pop that swells with the strings about a minute in and then keeps your attention.
Runnner: Coinstar
Soaring indie-rock.
Annie DiRusso: Back in Town
Whilst I would like to shake the song’s protagonist and tell them they clearly don’t need this stupid bloke in their life the overall package of the song is excellent. Surely an Olivia Rodrigo support slot awaits.
