This week’s single of the week is drawing attention to, and raising money for, a very important cause.

Single of the Week: Together For Palestine – Lullaby

A very powerful reworking of a traditional Palestinian song performed by a collection of big-name artists, including Neneh Cherry, Brian Eno, Dan Smith from Bastille and Celeste. All proceeds go to the Together For Palestine fund.

Gorillaz – Damascus (feat. Omar Souleyman and Yasiin Bey)

The latest very strong Gorillaz single features Syrian superstar Omar Souleyman (pushing 60 years of age, but effortlessly cool ever since he did a couple of tracks with Four Tet) and Yasiin Bey, the brilliant rapper formally known as Mos Def. Is The Mountain going to be the best Gorillaz album ever? The evidence is stacking up.

Self Torque – Del Shannon

Runaway by Del Shannon remains one of the greatest tracks ever made. It came out in 1961 but was so far ahead of its time it remains a fantastic listen to this day. Self Torque are a Brighton based band and use Shannon as inspiration for this impressive new single that channels something of a spaghetti western meets rock vibe. They are appearing at The Library on the Cowley Road in Oxford on the 7th of February and if we weren’t watching Bryan Cranston in All My Sons that evening we would most definitely have been there.

Rifle and The Chisel – Worthless

The Rifle have been putting out a decent series of punk singles. Here they collaborate with the much more established punk outfit The Chisel.

Dry Cleaning – Let Me Grow And You’ll See The Fruit

Dry Cleaning are something of an acquired taste, but if you like their output, you will enjoy this whimsical effort.

Health – Antidote

Health have been producing industrial-rock for about twenty years now. This is strong on atmosphere in a Depeche Mode meets indie-pop kind of way.

Blush Puppy – Under The Water

Enjoyable heavy rock track. There is an EP out in March next year.

Nothing – purple strings

An American band who have an often more muscular take on shoegaze. This is a simple, but haunting, tune that builds in beauty and complexity across nearly five minutes. They are on tour in the UK in April.
