Two amazing vocalists battle it out for single of the week.

Single of the Week: Tyler Ballgame – I Believe In Love

Sometimes magic comes from the strangest of places. After drifting in a sea of depression for the best part of a decade, Tyler Perry found himself again with the help of a counsellor and dietician called Courtney Huard . He created a new stage persona, Tyler Ballgame, and found ways to connect with the audiences who came to the open mike nights he attended. The reactions to his cover of Roy Orbison’s ‘Crying’ were intense and helped focus him onto the type of material he wanted to write. Then Courtney Huard was killed by her husband and it made him even more determined to live on her behalf. He has already been the subject of a bidding war and had a series of high profile interviews and features. The debut album comes out in January. This is a beautifully classic tune that showcases his amazing vocal skills.

Florence + The Machine – One Of The Greats

The second single from the album and so nearly two for two in Single Of The Week. Another incredible track with an intense and controlled performance with amazing backing. Some of the lyrics are utterly devastating. A very special album is incoming.

Tom A. Smith – I Don’t Blame You

A massive talent who has been greatly praised for his live performances for months now. Catch him supporting The Lottery Winners in November.

Master Peace – Spin The Block

Another fantastic single from Master Peace. Another toe-tapping indie stomp with his great voice over the top.

Eliza McLamb – Suffering

At 23 years of age Eliza McLamb has done more living than some people manage in a lifetime. She is a serious artist and the way this switches from piano accompanied vocal to full on rock out is impressive.

Sofia Isella – Out in the Garden

At only 20 years of age, Sofia Isella is one of the most exciting young talents on the planet. She already has a unique style that is entirely all her own and each release leaves you wandering how much further she will push the envelope. Her Reading Festival performance, with just herself switching between guitar and violin accompanied by a backing track, was truly extraordinary.

Shelf Lives – like heR

One of my favourite discoveries from this year’s Are You Listening? Festival. Shelf Lives are a duo with bags of attitude.

Honeyglaze – Movies (English Teacher Rework)

We have previously commented that Honeyglaze and English Teacher came to a rather similar sound, within different corners of the country, at about the same time. English Teacher got their album out there first and have a slight edge. Here though, English Teacher provide a radical rework that completely alters the original with a very un-English Teacher glitchy electronic backing track. Both bands have huge wells of potential.

Kasabian – Hippie Sunshine

Kasabian return with an enjoyable groove based track that briefly goes a bit Elton John in the middle.

Flock of Dimes – Defeat

A great track from a very, very good album that is out on the 10th of October. Frequent Bon Iver collaborator Jenn Wasner is a proper talent.

Tame Impala – Dracula

Smooth effort from Kevin Parker that threatens go full Weeknd at points.
