After a flurry of three albums within 18 months Ghostwoman took a bit of time away before returning with this treat.
Ghostwoman started as a project by multi-instrumentalist Evan Uschenko, from Canada. After recording the debut album alone he ran into drummer Ille van Dessel in Belgium and she became an integral part of the next two albums. New album ‘Welcome To The Civilized World’ is something of a reaction to modern life, recorded on older kit that gives it the flavour of a 1970’s garage rock album.

The album begins with title track ‘Welcome To The Civilized World.’ A few piano notes ring out before the track begins proper, it has an infectious energy to it. Part Raveonettes, part Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster. Next comes brilliant single ‘Alive’. They claim not to put too much effort into lyrics but it seems somewhat unbelievable when they feel so intrinsic to the track.
‘That Jesus’ has more of an underlying groove, like The Black Keys meets psychedelia. They have achieved the timeless quality they were aiming for.

‘Gold Pieces’ stands out for its use of a drum machine. Apparently, it was the first test they did on the equipment they purchased to record on. They loved the sound so much they kept going back to it despite plenty of efforts to record it better. ‘From Now On’ has a slightly different pacing and structure to it
‘Anhedonia’ is the lack of interest, enjoyment or pleasure from life’s experiences. Not something you will experience listening to this very good album. It is very focused and doesn’t outstay its welcome. If you have any interest in 70’s garage rock this album will most definitely speak to you.
