Angelic swearing and Irish magnificence battle it out for the top spot on our curated new singles playlist.

Single of the Week: Gracie and Rachel – WTF

An ethereal piece of magic for this week’s single of the week. Gracie and Rachel say, “We hope there’s some humour found in singing the words “what the f**k” angelically… It’s the wave of impatience to wonder how to leave, the exclamation point to not, and the wonder why you didn’t or when you will.” They will be appearing in the UK for the first time at the end of the month supporting Ani DiFranco on four dates.

Cardinals – Big Empty Hearts

You know the drill – another week, another great band from Ireland. This is an absolutely quality release. They have been compared to so many very different, extremely high quality, bands already that they cannot be anything other than brilliant and crossing between many indie sub-genres. They are supporting Fontaines D.C. at Finsbury Park in July before seven UK headline dates in September.

The Swell Season – Great Weight

The previous three singles were all very decent, but this track bodes very well for their first new album in sixteen years. There is something very Tom Waits and Bob Dylan about it, i.e. it is brilliant.

Mark Ronson and Raye – Suzanne

You have to wonder if this would have been one for Amy Winehouse were she still with us. In her absence, Raye is here to provide an equally wonderful vocal performance. This has a great, classic sound to it and would have been a chart botherer anywhere between 1970 and now.

The Sick Man of Europe – Profane Not Profound

Already with a Reading Indie Life single of the week under their belt for ‘Obsolete’ this is another REALLY, really good track. The album is out on the 20th and our review should be out in the next couple of days.

David Byrne and Ghost Train Orchestra – Everybody Laughs

It is always a joy to have new music from Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. This is the first single from a new album due in September that has various guest artists and collaborators on it. This track is joyously uplifting.

House of Women – Like It Did Before

House of Women were a real highlight at Are You Listening? Festival last month and I have no doubt they will go onto great things. This is another strong single, it carries a slightly mournful tone with more demonstration of their controlled use of electric guitars to aid in the motional tone.

Pinkshift – Anita Ride

Second single from a new album due at the end of August. Satisfyingly heavy rock with very strong vocals.

Revolution – TSHA

An absolute anthem for our times. This is growing on me more with every listen.

Also on the playlist: Twenty One Pilots, Hamish Hawk, Japanese Breakfast, Nova Twins, Nemzzz and Biffy Clyro amongst a number more.
