It is another bumper week of new releases with a number of 90’s survivors rearing their heads alongside a range of newer talent.
Single of the Week: Turnstile – LOOK OUT FOR ME
I think it is safe to say I am looking forward to the new Turnstile album more than anything else out there on the release schedule for the next couple of months. They have been transforming into a fantastic band over a number of years but the sheer range of the singles released so far suggests the newest album is going to be something very special indeed. ‘NEVER ENOUGH’ was absolutely epic, ‘SEEIN’ STARS’ felt like it beamed in from a parallel 1980s where this was duking it out with The Police for number one. Then there is ‘BIRDS’ which is about as hardcore, old school, Turnstile as it gets. This new one continues dragging in a wide range of influences married to a fantastic heavy-rock riff and some exceptionally big hitting drumming.
St. Vincent feat. Mon Laferte – Tiempos Violentos
The other track that nearly got single of the week. It is ironic that Alison Goldfrapp also has a single out this week as with its heavy theatrics, woozy brass and old school crooning you could have easily assumed this was her work. It would have sat nicely on Felt Mountain. Tiempos Violentos is Spanish for ‘Violent Times’ (also the Spanish name for Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction) and this is a reworking of that track from her last album. It would make a fantastic Bond Theme.
salam ilese – fridge
The already successful American singer songwriter and social media phenom is back with a single that I just love. A simple idea, well executed. Great chorus.
Another Sky – Let’s Talk (Take Us There)
Seriously, if you are going to announce you are splitting up as a band have the decency to turn out some rubbish rather than exceptional high-quality music like this!!! They are going to be sorely missed, another victim of the impossible mechanics of running a band at a profit .
Robbie Williams and Tony Lommi – Rocket
Williams has always expressed a love of guitar music and this first release from new album ‘Britpop’ suggests he is going all in for rock and Britpop vibes. A decent effort.
Suede – Disintegrate
Another week where I thought it would be all about Pulp, but instead Suede pop up to claim the best single from a 90’s band this week prize. Recognisably them, though Brett Anderson’s voice is evolving from what it once was. 10th studio album Antidepressants is due in September.
Pulp – Got To Have Love
Another decent track, I think it might grow on me a lot more by the time the album is out. Lyrically there are some wonderful Jarvis moments on here.

Doves – Cally
This has been floating around for a couple of months as part of Record Store Day and various other things but finally gets a digital release. Jimi Goodwin delivers the vocals and his presence from the band tour remains sorely missed.
White Lies – Nothing on Me
From an as yet unknown seventh album. This first new music in three years is right up there with the best tracks they have ever done. A fast, intense guitar track.
These New Puritans – Wild Fields
Released a couple of days before the album dropped on Friday (Blimey, what a lot of interesting new albums came out Friday!). There is a strong Depeche Mode vibe on this track.
Dinosaur Pile-Up – Big Dogs
Cracking, cracking new track from the Leeds band who have been around since 2007. They plough a nice line in grunge and alternative rock and they absolutely nailed this one.
