The indie-funk outfit got to kick off things at St Laurence Church for AYL?2025.

Made up of members of Fat White Family, Meatraffle, Pregoblin and with membership of a host of other bands, this sort of supergroup play around with genre conventions. With members originally from Brazil and Italy there is a diverse range of sounds and interests creating a melting pot that reimagines them for a more modern sensibility.

Y are not big presences on the stage, but they are well honed musicians and play their songs very well and with energy. There is only a single 4 track EP from them so far and it sounds great. Their support slots for Fat Dog over the last year make a lot of sense and this set enjoyably confirms that the saxophone is very much back as an instrument of choice for indie bands.

Their 30-minute slot whizzes past and the crowd is absolutely present and enjoying the up-tempo funk rhythms. They save the brilliant ‘Why’ for last. Mainly instrumental, it barrels along at ferocious pace powered by the saxophone and subtle hints of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern music. They have done a great job of warming up the venue and the audience for the rest of the day.
