Visiting The Face Bar in Reading on the 31st of March, dropping their debut album today the 7th of March.
It was about 8 years ago guitarists Tallulah and Lola were put together in a music lesson at secondary school and rapidly became firm friends. Current drummer Alfie was added at Music College in Brighton. Hotshock opens with a double single salvo. First up is ‘She’s Got A Problem,’ pleasant enough but a little generic. Much better is ‘Wanna Be a Doll,’ an apology for singer Tallulah’s more frustrating habits. Her voice is one of the strongest parts of this power rock trio. She has a voice that is both familiar, emulating a few different great female artists at times but ultimately is her own and is consistently her own across the album.

This is a wonderfully fresh take on very classic rock and garage rock stylings. They create an intense racket for a three-piece, musicians with a high level of control. The drumming and guitar play is exceptional for a debut. Things continue to escalate on ‘One More Reason,’ three minutes of sonic perfection. The following track ‘In Her Bedroom’ leans into grungier stylings. The control of tempo and pace on display on this track are markers of a band highly likely to go on to bigger things.
This is a visceral collection that keeps things short and sweet, 10 tracks lasting a total of just 28 minutes. As a calling card it is an extremely strong debut album, see them on their current small venue tour while you can. Greater things beckon.
